Books can be useful as gifts, if you want to get into someone's good graces. But make sure you find the right book for the right person. One way to know what if any items a character likes is to ask "what's up" from the interaction menu. Then they might mention wanting a particular genre of book. Giving books helps to improve your standing with an NPC (non-player character) group. Other items you can gift include a box of chocolates and cigarettes. To gift an item choose the give item option in the NPC interaction menu.
